Understanding and Managing Cellulite

How many of us have been emotionally damaged by the looks of cellulite in several places of our bodies? Honestly, I lost count of how many times this has happened to me and the only thing that gets me through it is understanding where it comes from and if there is something to improve it even a bit. So here are a few things you may want to know about cellulite that will help you keep loving your body.

First of all, cellulite is formed when fat cells are pushing and tightening against tissue under our skin making it appear uneven and lumpy on areas like the belly, thighs, hips, and buttocks. This is more common in women than in men due to the difference in our tissue structure and factors such as estrogen levels, low circulation, and collagen production.

We would normally think that being a super active and fit person will keep us far away from having cellulite or thinking “If I had exercised more I would not have cellulite”, but unfortunately, it does not work that way. Many factors influence in having cellulite in our body and most of them are inevitable. For example, genetics, hormones, gender, and age. So let’s stop overthinking and feeling guilty about one of the many natural characteristics of the woman’s body.

As we have talked on other blogs, our skin loses collagen and elasticity with age and this causes many effects on the appearance of our skin. In this case, cellulite becomes more noticeable as we age and a little help from the outside is no harm to help our skin compensate for what is lost throughout the years.

Of course, since cellulite is fat being pushed through tissue, the amount of fat in our body influences the amount of cellulite in a body, and the healthier the lifestyle the less cellulite. However, any woman can have cellulite on a different scale. Yes, womanhood at its best.

The scale goes from Grade 1 referring to it as the well-known ‘orange-peel’ skin, then Grade 2 which is regularly compared to the funny texture of cottage cheese, and lastly Grade 3 in which it is described as a mattress with the simulation of its marks.

Now that you have a better idea of what cellulite is and what it involves, here comes the bright side… There are several things we can do to reduce it and improve the appearance of our skin. Remember always to consult with your skin expert before doing anything.

As we always like to remind you, enhancing your body comes from the inside out so keeping hydrated, a balance of healthy foods, and getting your steps of the day can all help on this topic.

In this case, the more help we give to our body, the better, and while there is no magic wand, here are a few treatments of easy access and ingredients that contribute to reducing cellulite.

  • Massages. This is probably the oldest method known on Earth but what matters is using the proper technique that will stimulate lymphatic drainage that addresses the deficiencies caused by cellulite. Your trusted spa or salon may have this service just make sure the ingredients and tools (e.g. dry body brush or vacuum cup) being used are effective for your specific area.
  • Creams and lotions. Constancy is the key when using them making sure that they contain ingredients like caffeine and Maca that helps dehydrate cells and will help improve the appearance of the skin like when we use it on our face.
  • Procedures. These are done by medical professionals such as cosmetic dermatologists who use tools like lasers and radiofrequency directly to the desired area over a certain number of sessions. Make sure to know about their procedures and recommendations before starting any of them.

It may be frustrating and bring a lot of self-consciousness for many of us, which is valid, just remember it is super common and a harmless skin condition that can be improved with your trusted skin specialist.
